Prerequisites

To enrol in a PADI Open Water Diver course (or Junior Open Water Diver course):

  • You must be at least 10 years old.
  • You need adequate swimming skills and comfort in the water.
  • No prior experience with scuba diving is required.

Alternatively, you can join the Zero Limits Diving team when training in coastal locations such as Sodwana Bay or Mozambique.

Note: Divers aged 10–14 years earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification.

Course Outline

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is designed to develop your knowledge, skills, and confidence through a combination of online learning, pool training, and open water dives.

During the course you will:

  • Complete five online knowledge development sections with quizzes and a final exam.
  • Learn essential scuba skills during five confined water (pool) sessions.
  • Complete the required water skills assessment.
  • Put your training into practice during four exciting open water dives.
  • Build the confidence to dive safely and independently with a buddy.

Dive Depths

Throughout your training you’ll gradually increase your experience and comfort in the water.

  • Open Water Dives 1 & 2: Maximum depth of 12 metres
  • Open Water Dives 3 & 4: Maximum depth of 18 metres
  • When completing three dives in one day, the final dive is limited to 12 metres.
  • Excursion dives completed before Dive 3 are limited to 12 metres.

Equipment

At Zero Limits Diving, we provide all the equipment you need to complete your course.

You’ll learn to dive using:

  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Fins
  • Regulator
  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
  • Cylinder (Tank)
  • Dive Computer/Gauges
  • Air fills

Your instructor will also teach you how each piece of equipment works, giving you the confidence to use it safely and correctly throughout your diving adventures.

Getting Started

Once you’ve booked your PADI Open Water Diver Course and your payment has been confirmed, you’ll receive access to PADI eLearning, allowing you to complete the theory portion of the course at your own pace before your practical training begins.

One of our friendly Zero Limits Diving PADI Instructors will then contact you to arrange your pool sessions and open water dives, answer any questions, and guide you through every step of your journey.

Training typically requires 4–5 days of practical sessions and is usually conducted over weekends, with weekday training available by prior arrangement.
